Managing Sexual Orientation in the Workplace
More than 5% of the current UK workforce is lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB).
Since 2003, The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations have outlawed discrimination in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation.
Evidence suggests that although employers all over the UK are now responsible for homophobia in their workplaces, many aren’t aware that this is the case. This leaves many UK employers open to prosecution and needs to be tackled at every level.
How do organisations go about changing management styles, breaking down prejudice, improving communication among team members and helping employees deal more effectively with customers and their peers who are, or might be gay or lesbian?
Awareness training is critical to enable organisations to tackle homophobia.
Employers who don't take steps to educate and support employees so that they have an understanding of the regulations regarding sexual orientation and their importance will run the risk of prosecution.
If employers want to attract gay and lesbian employees and customers as well as create 'safer' workplaces, training is essential. In today's workplace, creating a diverse team is critical to an organisation's success.
Ensuring that employees are valued as individuals and working in safe environments is not only a legal responsibility, it is also a major growing trend that parallels the UK’s ever-changing demographics.
